Examined mechanisms regulating the homeostasis of the personality system in 40 patients (aged 22–50 yrs) affected by epileptic seizures and in 40 patients (aged 20–47 yrs) with multiple sclerosis. Since these diseases are complex, involving neurophysiological, psychological, social, and rehabilitative factors, the authors used the psychodynamic model of the psychology of the ego and examined 2 defense mechanisms: repression and isolation. There was an increase in the use of both mechanisms to preserve a state of congruence between the self-image and the body image. This result confirmed the hypothesis that in situations of neurological chronic pathology, especially those characterized by seizures, these particular mechanisms are activated when the integrity of the identity is threatened.
