The paper analyses some historical, philological, and methodological as- pects of the edition of Tacitus edited by Johann August Ernesti (1752 and 1772), arguing that this work fully belongs to the cultural background that anticipated and prepared Wolf’s epistemological contribution in the field of Altertumswis- senschaft. The paper also includes excerpts from the unpublished correspondence between Ernesti and the Dutch philologist Frans van Oudendorp (1696-1761).
