This paper deals with the presence of the name Marcus Octavius in the lower margins of the PHerc. 1149/993 (Epicurus, On Nature, Book II) and 336/1150 (Polystratus, On the Irrational Contempt). It has been possible to establish that the person who wrote the name is the same who added annotations in the margins of the Polystratus papyrus. Therefore, Marcus Octavius must have been a reader attentive to the philological reconstruction of the text of the first Epicurean philosophers.

Abstract

This paper deals with the presence of the name Marcus Octavius in the lower margins of the PHerc. 1149/993 (Epicurus, On Nature, Book II) and 336/1150 (Polystratus, On the Irrational Contempt). It has been possible to establish that the person who wrote the name is the same who added annotations in the margins of the Polystratus papyrus. Therefore, Marcus Octavius must have been a reader attentive to the philological reconstruction of the text of the first Epicurean philosophers.
