This paper offers a detailed analysis of a group of archaic antefixes with gorgoneia from Capua, which have so far received only limited scholarly attention. They differ in form and style from the more common gorgoneion-mask types surrounded by a tongue frame, typical of the Campanian decorative system. Comparative analysis suggests that the “atypical” Capuan gorgoneia share notable affinities with the iconographic repertoire from Greece and Magna Graecia, particularly that of Taranto – affinities that carry important implications for their dating. Nevertheless, these artifacts ultimately emerge as entirely original creations, characterized by a distinctly CampanianCapuan identity.
