Riemergere dalle ceneri di un genocidio con il contributo dello sport

In 2022, the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime, organised within the United Nations, was dedicated to sports. But can sports really help a population recover from the trauma of genocide? And, above all, can sports make a valid contribution to preventing this or other terrible international crimes from being repeated? Motivated by these two questions, and with the aid of the narrative of the film Rising from ashes, we will investigate the concrete contribution made by cycling and other sporting practices that arrived in Rwanda at the end of the atrocities. We will continue the investigation, focusing on the research and study of new instruments for the reparation and prevention of mass violence, examining, on the one hand, the specific function that sports play within the framework of Rwandan government policies and, on the other hand, whether and how this function can be reconciled with the practice of international organisations in the field of sports.
