In the last years, the level of trust in the Institutions, the Political Parties, and the Policy Makers has decreased in all Eurpean countries and particularly in Italy. Even in the presence of positive economic trends, as the increase in the GDP, aggregate investment and consumpyion, and higher levels of Government spending, the decrease in trust has constantly continued. Also, firms and consummers are particularly pessimistic towards the general economic recovery and the crisis of trust seems to be even more important for future investment and consumption. The specific aspect of the “trust crisis” has not received much attention in the current analyses on the Economic Policies in the post pandemic era. In the present paper, I analyse the causes and the consequencies of the lack of trust on the efficacy of the fiscal policy, using the strategic models of Economic Policy. Furthermore, I examine what instruments can be adopted in order to prevent the trust crisis, starting with the reform of the independent agencies, like the Corte dei conti and the Antitrust, which act as third parties and improve the credibility of the Policy Makers, thus affecting the propensity to trust of firms and consummers.
