Urban Creativity intensively pervades urban and peri-urban areas. Its wide extension is accompanied by reflections and debates on the historical and/or artistic value of some artworks, the lawfulness of actions, the need for instruments to regulate activities and impacts, the eventual conservation and related criteria, the involvement of local communities, according to the dictates of the Faro Convention and others. In this complex framework, ICOMOS Italia - urged by the need of evaluations and Urban Creativity intensively pervades urban and peri-urban areas. Its wide extension is accompanied by reflections and debates on the historical and/or artistic value of some artworks, the lawfulness of actions, the need for instruments to regulate activities and impacts, the eventual conservation and related criteria, the involvement of local communities, according to the dictates of the Faro Convention and others. In this complex framework, ICOMOS Italia - urged by the need of evaluations and guidelines - set up a specific Working Group on these issues in 2023. The Group has set as the basis of its first analysis the relationship between artwork and context for the recognition of values and the analysis of the impact in the built environment and landscape. This looks at the inseparable connection between “architectural work” and “urban or rural setting”, ratified by the Venice Charter. The contribution in applying this critical viewpoint recognizes the relevance of the Charter's foundations in relation with a sui generis phenomenon such as Urban Creativity.
