The aim of this essay is to bring attention to the history of the Davis collection, owned by a wealthy American family that settled in Naples at the end of the nineteenth century and purchased Villa Floridiana. By reconstructing the life, passions, and connections of its founder, Alexander Henry Davis, the article seeks to contribute to the history of the many foreigners who chose to reside in Italy, often in historic buildings furnished with valuable antiques. While this phenomenon has been thoroughly studied in relation to Florence and Rome, it remains largely unexplored in the context of Naples. Given the limited existing research on the subject, this essay should be seen as a preliminary contribution, aimed at initiating further study and suggesting possible avenues for future research.
