This paper examines the investigation conducted by Deborah Puccio-Den in Mafiacraft by highlighting the political and moral tenor of processes of judicial categorization, and specifically the processes of subjectification that descend from the modes of objectification of responsibility. By analyzing Puccio-Den’s use of the mafia archive, an attempt is made to show a tragic dimension of Italian history and its moral economy, traversed at once by a binary partition and an ambiguous relationship between the State and the mafia, which the archetypal evidential paradigm, namely Sophoclean Oedipus Rex, is able to render intelligible.
