Anyone who has delved into the history of Aversa has run across the toponym Gaudo/Galdo (from wald), indicating the existence of an ancient forest. Indeed, the area to the southwest of town down to the seaside, now densely populated, was once a thick woods, although already in the Middle Ages it was being reduced. The very recollection of its existence, already fading in the eighteenth century, was lost altogether along with its landmarks. The present essay seeks to recover the history of Gaudo and determine its geographical area thanks to the consultation of archival documents from the early 18th century, written when fixing its extension had become a matter of financial concern. These papers, along with other sources, make it possible to rediscover toponyms from the past that call up the memory of vanished or radically changed sites in a contemporary landscape.
