The purpose of this paper is to estabilsh some methodological assumptions of a research on the representation of pop/rock oriented popular music in the contemporary fiction since the 1950s. In this direction, I will first introduce an example of a thematic network of popular music taken from A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan, then I will survey the possible reasons of the limited critical attention so far paid to a subject that lies at the crossroads of cultural studies, studies on intermediality and thematic criticism. Eventually, I will turn to connecting the cultural-material features of the research with an intermediate framework, based on Werner Wolf’s musical-literary typology.
