Abstract

This article analyses the contribution of Hermann Julius Hermann to the development of the history of manuscript illumination, highlighting his fundamental role in initiating the study of Renaissance manuscript painting in Southern Italy and, in particular, of the illuminated manuscripts in the library of Andrea Matteo III Acquaviva. The article also discusses a hitherto neglected leather binding (Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana) featuring a profile portrait of Andrea Matteo III and the Acquaviva coat-of-arms, a particularly significant addition since it is the only original binding so far recovered.
