The contribution deals with the archiatri and their appearance in Roman world, with specific regard to the significance of the word – clearly derived from Greek language – in the epigraphic and literary sources, both legal and extra-juridical, from the Hellenistic period to the late antique age. Particular attention is also de-voted to the privileges bestowed to this composite professional category by the imperial legislation.
