The present article aims to analyse spa tourism in Portugal from the stand point of its geographical and historical evolution from its origin (Roman age) to the present day. The analysis identified five stages of development. The most recent one, comprising the present day, is characterized by the expansion of both the quality and the quantity of the service offered, to the extent of creating a conceptual shift from spa tourism to health tourism.
