Abstract

Since the 70s of the XX century, the implementation of a set of shari’a compliant instruments, within the banking and financial sector, allowed the creation of a foreign trade financing system based on Koranic principles prohibiting pecuniary interests and aleatory contracts. The partnership-based characterization of these instruments, founded on traditional legal models, is the main innovation that allows their adaptation to the different national and international operating contexts. The examination of the various types of Islamic letters of credit (LC-i) will make it possible to verify the operational perspective of the Islamic commercial credit systems and to understand the implications in the course of the business dealings within the Islamic Countries.
