IL MEDITERRANEO, L’ITALIA E IL FASCISMO NELLE PAGINE DI PIETRO SILVA

Il saggio mette in evidenza il contributo che Pietro Silva ha offerto alla storiografia italiana, ponendo nella sua opera lo spazio mediterraneo come oggetto di indagine storica. Attraverso un’approfondita analisi della produzione scientifica di Silva, in particolare delle diverse edizioni della sua opera Il Mediterraneo dall’unità di Roma all’unità d’Italia, contestualizzata nel clima culturale e nel dibattito storico sul Mediterraneo degli anni tra le due guerre mondiali, il saggio analizza i principali temi della sua ambiziosa ricostruzione di storia politica del Mediterraneo e le ragioni dell’oblio della sua opera nella storiografia postbellica. Emergono così diversi aspetti problematici, come il tema della centralità del Mediterraneo nella politica e nella cultura del regime fascista, il poliedrico rapporto del binomio Mediterraneo e Italia, oltre all’innovativa prospettiva della costruzione di una “storia” del Mediterraneo.

The essay intends to highlight the contribution that Pietro Silva has offered to Italian historiography by placing the Mediterranean space in his work as an object of historical investigation. Through an in-depth examination of Silva's scientific production, in particular of the various editions of his monumental work Il Mediterraneo dall’unità di Roma all’unità d’Italia,contextualized in a careful reconstruction of the cultural climate and the historical debate on the Mediterranean in the years between the two world wars, the essay analyzes the main themes of his ambitious overall reconstruction of the political history of the Mediterranean and the reasons for the oblivion of his work in post-war historiography. Thus, various problematic aspects emerge such as the theme of the centrality of the Mediterranean in the politics and culture of the fascist regime, the multifaceted relationship between the Mediterranean and Italy ,as well as the innovative perspective of building a "history" of the Mediterranean.
