The attention of the studies to the portrait production of Wilhelm Tischbein is still very lacking today. Even more neglected is the subgenre of the self-portrait in its various forms, representing for Tischbein a field of experimentation that deserves to be read and examined in its entirety, starting with the six pictorial examples known so far, of which an interpretation relating to the role that each of them plays in marking a specific period of the artist’s life is here offered.
