Human Rights between "Surveillance Capitalism" and Hacker Ethic

Although there is no doubt that the new means offered by technology can act as a driving force for action in defence of human rights, the same tools have the potential to seriously harm the protection of those rights. This short essay focuses on the action taken by some hackers to ensure the full enjoyment of the “cyber rights”, most notably the right to privacy, online anonymity and informational self-determination, against the mass surveillance programmes undertaken by various governments, on the one hand, and the overwhelming power of internet giants, on the other.

Nonostante la tecnologia offra sempre nuovi strumenti che possono essere usati a difesa dei diritti umani, tali strumenti sono potenzialmente in grado di minacciare quei diritti. Il saggio si concentra sull’azione a difesa dei diritti digitali operata da alcuni hacker, che abbiamo definito gli hacker dotati di etica. Tra i diritti in questione vengono messi in rilievo il diritto alla privacy, l’anonimato in rete e il diritto all’autodeterminazione informativa, da un lato contro i programmi di sorveglianza di massa intrapresi da vari governi, dall’altro contro lo strapotere dei giganti di internet.
