A HAGIOGRAPHER AT WORK. DRAFTS FOR A «LEGENDA» OF SAINT LOUIS OF TOULOUSE The Vita «Signum magnum» (BHL 5056d) can be recognized as the most ancient legenda of saint Louis of Toulouse (circa 1317-1319). The paper examines from a philological point of view the only two extant fragments (BNF, lat. 5376, cc. 1r-6v; BAV, Ott. Lat. 2516) of the text, with regard to their material execution and narrative content. The analisys leads to define, as a first result, the genealogical relationship between the two witnesses, as well as to retrace the existence of other pieces, now lost, of the original genetic dossier. Furthermore, on the literary level, the fragments record the modus componendi of the author, who gradually amplifies a rather poor plot, by means of hagiographic plagiarism or scriptural and doctrinal digressions.
