Abstract

Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the Kingdom of Naples saw a profound transformation of its economic fabric and, with it, also its social structure. Even if it was not a sudden change, we can try to highlight the moment when, with the birth of European economic science, the merchant, a new subject fully present in southern society, was attributed to the merchant, the one that everyone the effects will be his route. This route will be the one that will give it not only a fundamental economic role, but also full social dignity.
