The overall purpose of my paper is to investigate Elsa Morante’s transtextuality in Arturo’s Island in order to show her modular imaginary at work. First, I propose a new chronology for the novel on the basis of a document acquired in 2016 by the Bibilioteca Nazionale Centrale of Rome which is dated October 5, 1949 and contains the story of a World War II hero returning to his native island. Then, I examine what may be defined as the prehistory of the novel as a matter of expressions, objects, characters migrating for Morante’s early works to Arturo’s Island.

Abstract

The overall purpose of my paper is to investigate Elsa Morante’s transtextuality in Arturo’s Island in order to show her modular imaginary at work. First, I propose a new chronology for the novel on the basis of a document acquired in 2016 by the Bibilioteca Nazionale Centrale of Rome which is dated October 5, 1949 and contains the story of a World War II hero returning to his native island. Then, I examine what may be defined as the prehistory of the novel as a matter of expressions, objects, characters migrating for Morante’s early works to Arturo’s Island.
