Giulio Andreotti and the Reunification of Germany Andreotti, Italian Foreign Minister and former and future Prime Minister, shocked the German political world with his public statements of September 1984 when he strongly opposed the reunification of Germany. A promoter of the Détente, he feared serious dangers for peace if the German reunification had taken place against Soviet Union and outside a European framework. Abstract
However, despite not foreseeing it like François Mitterand, he accepted the reunification later when the USSR agreed and it was linked to the creation of the Economic, Monetary and European Union as well to the strengthening of the CSCE. These conditions sealed the end of Europe’s division and the progress of the European unification that were priorities of his policy.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
