Abstract

The industrial progress of the Caserta area, started with the House of Bourbon, ac- quired a full realization only in the second half of the 20th century. The impact of in- dustrialization on rural civilization and the agricultural landscape, until then almost un- changed, is such as to favour the development of a manufacturing culture and a spirit of “cooperativism” on close to the calls of the land and community life, as invoked by Adriano Olivetti. The aim of the article is to analyse the dynamics of territorial transformation in re- lation to the industrial plan of Terra di Lavoro elaborated by Tekne as part of the ex- traordinary planning of the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno and its reflections on rurality, in social, cultural and economic terms, starting from the environmental scale up to the ar- chitectural scale. In particular, the analysis of the conflicts and benefits associated with this development model refers to the case study of Olivetti in Marcianise, a medium- sized city in the area between Naples and Caserta, where an unprecedented programme of modernisation was launched after the Second World War. In the light of unpub- lished documentation, the intention is to bring the programmatic action of the industri- al plans within the growth dynamics of Terra di Lavoro, captured in the crucial twen- ty-year period from 1960 to 1980.
