Esoterismo e tecnologia a confronto in Emilio Salgari

The article focuses on the relationship between exotic, esoteric and technological in the three novels of the Indo-Malay cycle of Emilio Salgari. In The Mystery of the Black Jungle, alongside a rather common exoticism, Salgari presents the theme of esotericism and then gives it a significant amplification in the next novel The Pirates of Malaysia. The King of the Sea, the third novel in question, complete the theme by comparing it with the technological theme. The rises of technology radically modifies the concept of adventure, based in the nineteenth century on exotic/esoteric, that evolves into the modern science fiction.

L’articolo si concentra sul rapporto tra esotico, esoterico e tecnologia in tre romanzi del ciclo dei pirati di Emilio Salgari. Ne I misteri della jungla nera, accanto a un esotismo piuttosto comune, Salgari introduce il tema dell’esoterismo per poi darne una significativa amplificazione nel romanzo successivo I pirati della Malesia. Il Re del Mare, terzo romanzo in esame, esaurisce il tema ponendolo a confronto con la tematica tecnologica. L’irrompere della tecnologia modifica radicalmente il concetto di avventura che, dal gusto ottocentesco basato sul meraviglioso esotico/esoterico, evolve nella moderna avventura fantascientifica.
