Starting from the concept of authoritarian liberalism coined by Hermann Heller, this paper aims to highlight some aspects overlooked by the international debate on authoritarian neoliberalism: the normative and subjective effects produced by power technologies based on the notion ofdanger, which have the role of hinding democratic processes through the production and channeling of anxiety. After analyzing the Neoliberalism’s relationship with the liberal-democratic Rule of law and with the economic and governmental crises of the Weimar Republic and the 1970s, the paper shows how current authoritarian neoliberalism can be thought of as a reactionary recodification of the anxiety created by the economic crisis and functional to solving a crisis of governmentality.
