Cultura di progetto giovannoniana per lo spazio sacro novecentesco

«The problem of tradition is the problem of all of us, and to put it clearly is already a difficult undertaking; because we might as well have solved it in half. But we are far from this. […] It is certain that we would prefer Catholic splendor to relativistic and actualistic fury ”. Eugenio Montale's words very effectively explain the widespread feeling of a large part of the Italian context of the first quarter of the twentieth century that he tried to define, after the Great War, the structure of his representative spaces and places where Italians could recognize themselves. Gustavo Giovannoni, in his representation as an integral architect, imagined designing churches for places of worship that were like "Preghiera costruita", that is, the work of man offered to the divine. Human work, because it was carried out by skilled hands, itself became an opportunity for a community to donate for the regained health in the face of the recent tragic experience of the world conflict.

«Il problema della tradizione è il problema di tutti noi, e porlo con chiarezza è già impresa difficile; ché tanto varrebbe averlo risolto a metà. Ma siamo lontani da questo. […] Al furore relativistico e attualistico è ben sicuro che anteporremmo lo splendore cattolico». Le parole di Eugenio Montale esplicitano assai efficacemente il sentire diffuso di larga parte del contesto italiano del primo quarto del Novecento che provava a definire dopo la Grande Guerra, l’assetto dei suoi spazi di rappresentanza e dei luoghi in cui gli italiani potessero riconoscersi. Gustavo Giovannoni, nel suo rappresentarsi come architetto integrale, per i luoghi di culto immaginava progettare chiese che fossero come Preghiera costruita, ossia lavoro dell’uomo offerto al divino. L’opera umana, perché svolta da mani sapienti diventava essa stessa occasione di oblazione di una comunità per la riguadagnata salute a fronte della recente tragica esperienza del conflitto mondiale.
