Abstract

Describing the Carthaginian religion at the time of Hannibal is a demanding task. Nevertheless, the available testimonies, albeit belonging to the winners, outline the figure of Hannibal from a religious point of view as a man who is respectful of the traditional religious values of his city, but also influenced by what we could define the Hellenistic nouvelle vague, thus inclined to the realization of that "heroic(-divine)" ideal whose model was represented by Heraklés / Melqart.
