Abstract

e publishing of articles in journals is a significant part of the scientific heritage of the subject area ICAR/18 which, for the three-year period 2014/2016, occupied 21,1% of the total production in over 219 publications, with it being attributed to 77% of university researchers. eir census describes a highly complex mosaic in which the results of a progressive modification of the modus operandi of the authors emerge. On the one hand, they are driven by global competition to examine wide-ranging and interdisciplinary themes with in- ternational publishers. While, on the other, they continue to invest in research aimed at their own territories with studies at both regional and local levels, that are published in national journals. Regarding the subjects of the study, the survey highlights the clear prevalence of publications dedicated to themes related to the 20th and 21st centuries, with a smaller percentage for more distant chronological contexts and a limited number dealing with the Middle Ages and antiquity. In this ranking, the predominate topics are architecture and the city, with specific attention to more or less-known figures of architecture as well as monuments and city and territorial contexts. Urban research remains a highly appealing sector, while specialized areas of research are strengthened, such as military architecture, industrial archeology and social housing. ere is also interest in the fields of study close to history of the project, such as tourism, fashion, photography and urban design. In general, the most significant novelty is represented by the journals published in Open Access, the system created following the Berlin Dec- laration of 2003 to allow for the widest possible dissemination of scientific information. e number of works published in this way, a few years after its affirmation among Italian universities, amounts to 6% of the total, proof of the fortune it has also acquired for our subject area.
