CIL X 5398, discovered in Aquinum in 1870, is the most complete source available about the cursus honorum of the senator C. Octavius Appius Suetrius Sabinus. This papers aims to shed new light on this significant inscription, now lost, which was published by Mommsen from a squeeze preserved in the Arbeitsstelle “Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum” of Berlin. A research carried out in Italian archives and a careful examination of the squeeze allows both to gain additional information on the paleography and the layout of the inscription and to produce in the text some rectifications with regard to Mommsen’s edition in CIL
