The term ‘voyage’ symbolises human life, knowledge and the way we experience places; it harks back to the distances and landscapes of elsewhere, changes and movements, and is a key word and this paper will analyse certain aspects of travelling from a historical-geographic point of view, highlighting both the relationship between spaces and territories and the social and cultural relationship that changes depending on the context, by focusing on objects such as the suitcases and trunks that have accompanied us on such adventures. In the past, people travelled for very particular reasons: trade interests, military expeditions or for religious reasons. Nevertheless, voyages – from their origins until today – remain an experience of change. Even as far back as the late eighteenth century, travel was an essential part of the education of younger members of the upper classes and an essential factor when organizing a voyage was choosing the clothing and accessories that it required]
Il viaggio è l’emblema della vita umana, della conoscenza e dell’esperienza dei luoghi. Le modalità del viaggiare nel corso della storia ed il presente lavoro analizzerà alcuni aspetti del viaggio in una prospettiva storico geografica tra spazi e territori che la relazione sociale e culturale, differente a seconda del contesto, attraverso l’oggetto valigia o baule da viaggio che ha accompagnato l’uomo in queste avventure. Nel passato, gli uomini si spostavano per ragioni ben precise: interessi commerciali, spedizioni militari e motivi religiosi ma il viaggio, dalle sue origini ad oggi, rimane comunque un’esperienza di cambiamento. Già alla fine del XVIII secolo venivano organizzati viaggi, che costituivano una tappa fondamentale per la formazione dei giovani delle classi sociali più elevate, e nell’organizzazione di un viaggio l’elemento fondamentale era l’abbigliamento e gli accessori connessi ad esso.
