OBJECTIVES. The aim of this study was to evaluate possible correlations between canine impaction and secondary specific lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A sample of 74 patients was analyzed. Inclusion criteria were: maxillary canine impaction, diagnosed both clinically and by examining pre-treatment dental casts, intraoral photographs and pre-treatment orthopantomograms, at stage of maturation CS2-CS4. The presence of the following lesions was verified: pericoronitis and follicular cyst, adjacent teeth impaction and root resorption. RESULTS. The prevalence of secondary lesions to impacted maxillary canines was: 42.202% pericoronitis, 22.018% follicular cyst, 33.027% root resorption and 1.835% adjacent teeth impaction. CONCLUSIONS. Early diagnosis of canine impaction is of primary importance for preventing the onset of possible associated complications.
