The paper aims at investigating Suetonius' representation of Augustus' literary activity as well as of the emperor's cultural ideology. In particular, the paper intends to demonstrate how Augustus gave his personal literary otium a political and public meaning, considering it like both a useful negotium and a powerful tool for his wider propaganda.
