The opening words of the Latin text and of the Greek version of the Res gestae divi Augusti show a clear difference in defining those from whom Augustus would have liberated the res publica (a dominatione factionis vs TMk tê$ tôn sunomosaménwn doul≠a$). Especially through attempting to unveil who is hiding behind the latin factio and the greek sunomosámenoi, the paper both aims at investigating the lexical as well as theoretical models of the two texts and at demonstrating the effective coincidence of the ideolo- gical message promoted in this delicate and deliberate exordium of Augustus’ political “testament”.
