COPD is a respiratory disease associated with important systemic effects, one of which is cognitive decline; this disorder is also recognised in patients without respiratory failure not yet treated with oxygen therapy. The study enrolled patients with stable COPD in absence of other factors capable of affecting cognitive function. All patients followed a pharmacological treatment with bronchodilator drugs and underwent a course of respiratory rehabilitation during a period of three weeks after their admission in hospital. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of respiratory rehabilitation treatment on the cognitive performance of patients as well as to identify latent forms of cognitive decline.
