Quite frequently during the familial Mediterranean fever among Sephardic Jews, amyloidosis can be prevented by taking Colchicine. The deposits of amyloid fibrilla are made up of 76-residuethe AA protein-which is identical to'the one found in secondary amyloidosis. In the Jewish form of familial amyloid polyneuropathy the protein is a pre- albumine which is the same as the normal pre-albumine except that residue 49 is glycine instead of threonine.
