We have investigated the role of bovine lactoferrin in protecting the intestinal epithelium from bacterial invasion. In particular, Caco-2, Chang Liver cells and primary culture hepatocytes were infected with L. monocytogenes (M.O.I. 100) in the presence of noncytotoxic, nonbactericidal concentrations of lactoferrin. The number of internalized bacteria was reduced by 50 to 100 fold in the presence of 1 mg/ml of bovine lactoferrin.
