Re-reading, after an interval of over fifty years, a number of pieces written in the period 1944-1949 on approaches to church restoration, allows a clearer perspective today of the historical and cultural context in which they were produced. This was characterised by what was perhaps the most importane current of art histmi¬cal thought in 20th century Italy, the so-called ‘Critical Restoration’.
