Marco Levi Bianchini was among the first Italian psychiatrists to take an active interest in clinical practice and Freudian doctrine, and in 1915 he set about translating ‘Uber Psychoanalyse,’ the five American conferences. This article aims at shedding light on how Levi Bianchini’s interest in psychoanalysis helped spread Freud’s ideas to Italian psychiatry circles at the start of the twentieth century but also, at the same time, on some of the consequences engendered by this interest. Abstract

Marco Levi Bianchini was among the first Italian psychiatrists to take an active interest in clinical practice and Freudian doctrine, and in 1915 he set about translating ‘Uber Psychoanalyse,’ the five American conferences. This translation was published in a collection founded by Levi Bianchini himself, while he was director of the ‘Vittorio Emauele II’ mental asylum at Nocera Inferiore, just south of Naples. This article aims at shedding light on how Levi Bianchini’s interest in psychoanalysis helped spread Freud’s ideas to Italian psychiatry circles at the start of the twentieth century but also, at the same time, on some of the consequences engendered by this interest. Secondly, the reception of Levi Bianchini’s psychoanalytical work is evaluated by looking at eleven of the most representative reviews published on it in Italy at the time.
