The article takes as its starting point of view the analysis of the modern theories that affirm that environmental protection need, next to “command and control” policies, the involvement of the business world, considering the environment not only as a cost, but also as an investment. The author focus his attention on the business actions directed to increase competitiveness not depressing prices, but acquiring the consumers that are sensitive to environmental aspects. The author points out the increasing importance that are gaining, in this field, the quality product labels and, therefore, examines the positive and negative features of these labels, particularly focusing on the european Ecolabel. The diffusion of the use of these labels also derives from the recent development of the public purchase policies so-called Green Public Procurement (GPP), on the strength of whom public administrations introduce also environmental aspects in the contracts evaluation procedures. The author concludes underlining how, in this context, the public policy should leave the authoritative approach, rather centring its actions in steering the business and consumers choices towards a “favorable” environmental protection.
