The personality traits of obese female adolescents undergoing diet treatment and their ability to handle the typical challenges of adolescent age are evaluated. Based on the comparison between Eating Disorder Inventory-2 and Offer Self-Image questionnaire values, 100 female overweight and obese adolescents were studied. Subjects were divided in three groups, and compared to a control group. Obese adolescents females describe themselves in more negative terms than non-obese individuals. The relationship between BMI and values expressing problematic personality traits tends to be linear and positive. Even in the absence of overt mental pathology, obesity might be associated with psychological characteristics, especially in high values of BMI.
