The introduction of arsenic trioxide is accredited to Spooner in 1836 who, in an age without anesthesia, used this substance to devitalize inflamed pulps.1 Later, the leakage of arsenic was known to cause severe damage and destruction to the tissues supporting the teeth. Abstract

The introduction of arsenic trioxide is accredited to Spooner in 1836 who, in an age without anesthesia, used this substance to devitalize inflamed pulps.1 Later, the leakage of arsenic was known to cause severe damage and destruction to the tissues supporting the teeth. As early as 1853, Harris noted that arsenic was extremely toxic and carcinogenic when it came into contact with hard and soft tissues, and in 1865 White spoke out strongly against its use in the treatment of sensitive teeth.2 However, this form of treatment became an immediate success and led to the imprudent use of arsenic. Since the advent of effective methods of securing anesthesia, the use of arsenic for pulp devitalization has declined. Despite the toxicity of arsenic trioxide, it is still used by some dentists to treat teeth. The aim of this study is to present and discuss a case of rehabilitation using osseointegrated implants on extensive osteonecrosis of the mandible following devitalization of a tooth by arsenic trioxide.ecrosis of the mandible.
