Abstract

In presence of anaerobiosis, when the oxygen supply is defective, the pyruvic acid is converted to lactic acid, because of lactatodeydrogenasis. This metabolic path allows the cells to bear a transitory hypoxia, which can occur following an intense exercise. The increased demand for plasma lactate and pyruvate-in particular by the Resuscitation Dept.-promotes the employment of rapid and authomatic methods. As a matter of fact they allow to reduce the times of reaction and only require small plasma samples.
