Abstract

A neclected entry in Hesychius’ lexicon, that seems to postulate the existence in Sparta of the custom to offer a sacrifice during the process of phratry admission, allows to propose a translation of the laconic verb ‘epipaizein’ as «to recognize someone as additional son», probably in reference to adoptive sons. Besides, it is attempted to frame the enigmatic Spartan phratries quoted by Hesychius in the context of the segmentation of the Spartan citizen body.
