Abstract

Oskar Nilsson’s thesis project, supervised by Marit Lindberg at Lund University, explores the relationship between material, craftsmanship, and form through the creation of four wooden chairs, each crafted from a single piece of timber. Using a limited range of mechanical tools, the design process allows the wood’s grain, knots, and irregularities to guide design decisions, resulting in asymmetrical, non-standardized forms. Moving beyond the functionalism of Scandinavian modernism, the project reclaims an expressive dimension of craftsmanship, evoking John Ruskin’s philosophy, his conception of the dignity of manual labour, and his interest in medieval culture and the Neo-Gothic repertoire.
