Evidence supports a prominent role for inflammation underlying the pathogenesis of a wide array of retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), retinal vein occlu- sion (RVO) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP), and suggests a role for anti-inflammatory therapies to potentially alter the severity and course of these disorders. Dietary supplements have been proposed as an ideal source for preventing retinal degeneration, especially supplements containing significant levels of antioxidants that help to reduce damage in retinal cells. Cur- cumin, homotaurine and vitamin D3 individually showed a slightly appreciable anti-inflammatory effect on the soluble mediators of inflammation and retinal damage. However, when used in combination, these ac- tive principles were able to modify the average levels of the mediators, both in vitro and in vivo. In the present study it is reported the OCT effects of 1-year oral supplementation with a nutraceutical based on a bioavailable form of curcumin (CureitTM), S-allyl-L-cysteine (SAC), homotaurine, lutein, zeaxanthin, folic acid, vitamin D3, vitamin C, vitamin E, copper, zinc (Retizin Angio, FB Vision, San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy) in three patients affected by different retinal conditions.
