This essay addresses the principal issues concerning the genesis and development of castles and fortified villages within the ‘historical’ territory of Terra di Lavoro, framed within the broader and extensively debated phenomenon of incastellamento, and examined through a predominantly archaeological lens. Although the available data remain fragmentary, archaeological research conducted over the past decades in the region has significantly contributed to the advancement of scholarly discourse on the transformation of the rural landscape between the 9th and 12th centuries, at times calling into question previously consolidated interpretative models.
