The history of the application of X-rays to the study of paintings is retraced and discussed, starting with the 1920s pioneering radiographic campaigns conducted in Europe and the United States by Alan Burroughs (Fogg Art Museum, Harvard) up to the innovative imaging techniques introduced after the war: autoradiography and MacroXRF mapping. The debate among scholars was partly opposed to the use of X-rays in the field of art history, but it also addressed the issue of technical and scientific research requiring a reliable insight into paintings.

Abstract

The history of the application of X-rays to the study of paintings is retraced and discussed, starting with the 1920s pioneering radiographic campaigns conducted in Europe and the United States by Alan Burroughs (Fogg Art Museum, Harvard) up to the innovative imaging techniques introduced after the war: autoradiography and MacroXRF mapping. The debate among scholars was partly opposed to the use of X-rays in the field of art history, but it also addressed the issue of technical and scientific research requiring a reliable insight into paintings.
