Abstract

The paper offers a first systematic analysis of the presence and re-use of Martial in Latin grammarians and commentators of Late Antiquity. The investigation of the texts highlights that the epigrammist’s quotations are a ‘new’ material, numerically meagre, less valuable and refined than the most illustrious long-standing auctores, which nevertheless contributes to the expansion and modernisation of a centuries-old “theoretical building".
