The paper focuses on the prefatory epistle of Francesco Dal Pozzo to his edition of Tacitus' works (the so-called editio Puteolana). Re-using and reshaping Cicero's words on historiographical theory and Thucydides' style, as well as some Tacitean chapters, Dal Pozzo, for the first time, highlights Tacitus' virtues from a stylistic and historiographical perspective, questioning the generic traditional hierarchy and laying the foundations both of auctoritas and interpretation of Tacitus in modern and contemporary Age.
