Abstract

In the Lysistrata Aristophanes mentions the name of the Spartan envoy, Pericleidas, who in the sixties of the 5th century B.C. went to the Athenians and requested their help against the Messenian rebels. The onomastic relationship between this Pericleidas and the Athenian leader Pericles has not yet received the consideration it deserves. This paper draws attention to a cup of the Ambrosios painter datable to the last years of the 6th century, in which a socially prominent young Athenian man, named Pericleides, is represented: he could be the missing link that connects the Spartan Pericleidas with Pericles.
